2021 SERVANT LEADER SCHOLAR

MARC LEWIS

"I FEEL THAT SERVICE IS THE KEY TO EMPOWERMENT OF OTHERS AND FULFILLMENT OF MY DESTINY."

— MARC LEWIS

MARC LEWIS

Co-Captain of the varsity baseball team, avid tenor saxophonist, and Valedictorian of his high school, Marc Lewis is a dynamic and zealous student-athlete and leader. Marc continues to go beyond the call and constantly finds ways to serve and uplift his community -- a mindset that was ingrained in him at an early age.

"My parents have always taught me that, to whom much is given, much is required", he said. "I can say that I have had a good life and in return, I enjoy giving back to those who may be less fortunate or less empowered."

As an elementary student at Bouie Elementary, Marc was a part of Bouie Progressive Young Males, a service organization that taught him the meaning of helping others. From singing to the elderly at the nursing home or feeding those experiencing homelessness in downtown Atlanta, Marc had an early start to service.

Now, as a young adult, Lewis continues to find ways to be of service within his community. He worked part-time at a local daycare center helping elementary students maneuver virtual learning during the pandemic.  "I get great pride and joy out of helping mold young minds into being caring youth that will grow into teens that see the need for service", Lewis said.

Marc's drive and holistic capabilities have afforded him the opportunity to attend the University of Georgia in the Fall of 2021 where he will study mechanical engineering.

"IT WARMS YOUR HEART TO KNOW THAT YOU WERE ABLE TO MAKE SOMEONE'S LIFE BETTER IN SOME WAY. I WAS RAISED TO ALWAYS HELP A FRIEND WHEN THEY ARE DOWN NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCE."

STEADFAST & DRIVEN

While it wasn't easy balancing all his myriad of extracurricular activities and academic obligations during his time at Stephenson, Lewis was diligent and ensured he was successful in and outside the classroom.

"Marc's drive is contagious and has resulted in helping his peers achieve as well", said Head counselor, Ms. Lolita Richards-Baker. While he wasn't traveling the Southeast with his team for baseball tournaments, Lewis was serving as the President of the National Honor Society, Treasurer of BETA, and a member of HOSA and TSA.

"These organizations have broadened my thought process and horizons regarding service", Lewis said. He was able to coordinate and participate in school beautification efforts, peer tutorials, and blood drives.

As COVID-19 transitioned Stephenson to virtual learning, this presented challenges for Lewis as he was forced to adapt to many changes within his academic and personal life. Nevertheless, he continued to remain steadfast and ended up becoming the Valedictorian of his senior class. He was able to give an amazing speech to his class at their in-person, social-distanced graduation in May of 2021.

A jack of all trades with an unbeatable work ethic, Lewis is sure to continue to make changes within his community while serving as an inspiration of servant leadership to those around me.
